Leading Causes of Mortality

From 1995–2005, data show that our leading cause of deaths are Heart Disease, Cancer, and Stroke. These are the same leading causes of death statewide and nationally. Cape County cancer rates are lower than the state and show a statistically significant decrease over time. Both heart disease and stroke are higher in the county than the state. However, there has been a statistically significant decrease in heart disease from 1995 while the rate for stroke has remained constant. The state experienced statistically significant decreases in all three leading causes of death since 1995. In Cape Girardeau County other statistically significantly increasing trends are found with: Alzheimer's disease, Kidney Disease and Diabetes and Diabetes. Rates of mortality (Heart Disease and Strokes) higher than the state are not consistent with behavioral risk factors. For example, as stated above, our county has a lower smoking rate that the state (20.9/26.5 respectively) and are even with physical inactivity. In addition, we are also lower in the percent of adults with high blood pressure (21.9%/28.5%) and adults with high cholesterol (36.6%/37.3%). Comparing Cape Girardeau County to St. Francois County finds our residents somewhat healthier. In St. Francois county mortality rate indicators show significantly higher statistics in Heart Disease, all Cancers, Lung Cancer, Unintentional Injuries, Diabetes and Suicide.
