Community Health Resource Indicators

For our indicators of leading cause of death (Heart Disease and Stroke) there is a base for improving the resources. There are some preventive programs available. For instance both hospitals have smoking cessation, and both have new, state of the art physical fitness centers. Both have just begun programs for low income either at no charge or very low charge. There are some opportunities here to collaborate with each institution. Perhaps we can assist in educating through our MCH programs these programs are available. We have several affordable or free of charge drug and alcohol treatment facilities, participate in the summer feeding sites and have several senior nutrition sites. Cape Girardeau County Public Health has a health educator who is active with day cares and work site wellness. However, we've identified through this process that there's much to do. There needs to be an increase in the promotion of early detection and diagnosis of colorectal cancer as evidenced by our number of people over 50 not participating in annual screenings (blood in stool and scopes)
