2007 COMMUNITY HEALTH DATA ANALYSIS Prevalence of Chronic Disease Risk Factors For 2003 our county had a lower smoking rate that the state (20.9/26.5 respectively) and are even with physical inactivity. However, we are higher in overweight adults (39.1/35.3). For men and women over 50 years of age who have never had a blood stool test, or a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. We are significantly higher: Blood stool test : County 63.9 vs. state 57 Sigmoinoscopy/Colonoscopy: County 65.8 vs. state 49.2 I have attempted to analyze indicators of obesity and inadequate diet by particular age groups, race or special populations. I called CHIME, speaking with Nancy Hoffman and Norma (last name?) who assisted with County profiles and MICA asking what site to go to. They too could not determine how to do this. However, our WIC reports indicate the number of WIC children with a weight for height greater than the 95th percentile increased very slightly from 19.7 in 2003 to 19.8 in 2004, and 21.8 in 2005. Our postpartum overweight (15.7 in 2003, 19.6 in 2004, and 17.2 in 2005) and obese women (39.6 in 2003, 41.2 in 2004, and 40.6 in 2005) have stayed fairly constant with minimal increases from 2003 to 2005. In addition, we see many overweight/obese children in our Pediatric Primary Care Clinic so we feel we have a problem in this area as does the rest of the USA. In the past local data from both hospitals, physician offices, schools and our Pediatric Primary Care Clinic as well as some environmental surveys showed a definite problem with childhood asthma. However, the 2005 rate for Emergency Room visits due to Asthma in patient's ages 1 year to 15 years was 3.6 per 1000 as compared to the higher state rate of 10.2 per 1000. Moreover, this is a dramatic improvement from 2003 when the rate was almost double at (6.3 per 1000), and indicates that the asthma prevention programs in place are effective. For Cape Girardeau County Public Health’s Pediatric Primary Care Clinic, Asthma and asthma related diagnoses account for approximately 60% of the office visits. |
