OVERVIEW

The Cape Girardeau County Healthy Communities Coalition is a group of individuals from public and private organizations working together to address local nutrition and lifestyle issues.  The coalition focuses on services and events that positively impact and encourage citizens to make healthy changes to their lifestyle.  The purpose of this group is to coordinate efforts of the health and lifestyle programs already in place, create additional activities and address gaps in services offered to particular neighborhoods, age groups or demographics.

The Coalition was brought about as a result of a comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment completed in Spring 2013 by SoutheastHEALTH and Saint Francis Medical Center. In this study, obesity was identified as one of the top health issues in Cape Girardeau County.  The most current data show residents having a 28% obesity rate with another 35% being overweight.  Obesity puts individuals at a greater risk of chronic health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, chronic joint and back pain, hypertension and many more.

This simple message has been adopted by the Healthy Communities Coalition to promote good nutrition and lifestyle choices. 5-2-1-0 is a nationally recognized obesity prevention program that was first designed to increase healthy eating and active living for children, but has since been expanded to include all age groups. For details about the program and tool kits for implementing a 5-2-1-0 program in schools, childcare facilities, workplace or healthcare facilities visit.

The Community Health Assessment is completed every three years. To read our 2015 Community Health Assessment, please click here.
