Required Training For Food Workers and Managers

The Cape Girardeau County Food Code, adopted November 20, 2008 requires that all managers and food handler’s employed in food establishments in Cape Girardeau County be trained in food safety. This requirement became mandatory on January 15, 2012.
Establishments with existing corporate training programs for hourly employees may apply for a variance to the training regulation.  To be granted a variance, the program must be reviewed and approved by the Cape Girardeau Public Health Center.

The following people must possess a Basic Sanitation Food Card:
• Shift leaders
• Cooks
• Food prep personnel
• Anyone who has direct contact with food items
This requirement can be met by attending the Basic Sanitation Class, a two hour program offered by the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center.  The FEE is $10.00 payable at the door.  After completion of the exam, Food Cards will be issued.

The following people are NOT required to obtain a Basic Sanitation Food Card:
• Servers
• Bartenders
• Dishwashers

*If any of the above positions require the employee to handle food (not including drinks), then the exemption does not apply.  For example, a server who prepares salad or a bartender who cooks food would be required to obtain a food card.

The following people must be certified in an advanced food safety course such as ServSafe:
